"MONGOLS WORDS IN PERSIAN SOURCES"
The second semester lecture-discussion of the 12th academic year of the "Student Researcher" scholarship program, initiated and organized by the AMT, was successfully held on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, from 18:00 to 20:30 at the AMT.
The guest speaker for the lecture-discussion was Dr. D. Ankhbayar, who delivered a lecture on the topic "Mongolian Words in Persian Sources." He noted that there is a significant research space for Mongolian words in Persian sources and encouraged students to pursue their interests with passion and not out of obligation. To briefly summarize the content of the lecture:
The central issue in Mongolian studies is the study of medieval languages. Scholars who have thoroughly researched this subject are few. The research includes studies of the Mongolian script in Arabic, dictionaries, and the historical sources related to the Mongolian language. An important aspect to consider in research is how accurately Mongolian words are studied within historical sources. The translation of Mongolian words in Persian sources is insufficient. Dr. Ankhbayar emphasized that there is a vast and comprehensive field of research on this topic, especially for those who are familiar with Persian, Arabic, and Chagatai.
In Persian sources, there are numerous Mongolian words related to the period of the Mongol Empire. For instance, the manuscript of the "Jami' al-Tawarikh" (Compendium of Chronicles), which has over 20 versions, has survived for over 700 years, which is quite remarkable. The reason for the preservation of this text is that Rashid al-Din would commission the production of 100 copies of manuscripts each year, which clearly involved significant financial investment. The lecture also presented various examples of Mongolian words related to family relations, religion, professions, weapons, taxes, wealth, animals, and geography from Persian texts. For example:
Family-related words: اباقا (âbâqâ), ابوگان (âbûgân), ابوگه (âbûge) – Bodonchar, آغا (Âghâ), النچیک (elançik) – Khabul, etc.
Religious terms: ارکاون (ârkâûn)
Profession-related words: âbâçî (hunter), âxtâçî (merchant), Idaçi (cloth maker), etc.
Weapon-related terms: اوبچین (ôpçîn) – weapon, بالته (balta) – axe, etc.
Tax-related terms: Ârghamjî, qobçur
Wealth-related words: âltân
Animal-related words: âxtâ, âdûn, ârghâlî, Chaghan aman qula, etc.
Geographical terms: Ghâzîrâ-î ârâl, Nekün usun, Olom (river), etc.
There were also many adjectives and verbs in the Persian sources that were related to Mongolian words, forming structures with Persian suffixes. Interestingly, many of these words appear as verbs, and linguists need to study them in more detail.
We thank Dr. D. Ankhbayar for accepting our invitation and delivering such an insightful lecture. We also express our gratitude to the students who attended. We wish you all great success in your research endeavors. written by: D. Lkhagvagerel
